Lofi jazz is lofi hip-hop that leans on jazz harmony: slow, swung drums under warm electric piano, guitar or saxophone, playing the rich "extended" chords jazz is known for. Where plain lofi might loop two simple chords, lofi jazz uses major sevenths, minor ninths and short jazz progressions, and that's what gives it the warm, slightly wistful, Sunday-afternoon feeling.
The chords that make it
You don't need to read music to hear these. Each one adds a note or two to a basic chord, and each has a mood.
- Major seventh (for example Cmaj7). A major chord with one extra note just below the top. Warm, dreamy, a little bittersweet. If lofi jazz has a signature sound, it's this.
- Minor seventh and minor ninth (Dm7, Dm9). Soft, rounded minor chords. The ninth adds a note that makes them float instead of feeling sad.
- Dominant ninth and thirteenth (G9, G13). The "leaning" chords that want to move somewhere. Jazz uses them to create gentle pull.
- The ii–V–I. The most common jazz progression: a minor chord, a dominant chord, then home. In lofi jazz it's often slowed down so much it feels like breathing.
A lot of lofi jazz simply rocks back and forth between two of these chords, say a major seventh and a minor seventh, for the whole track. That lack of drama is the point.
The instruments
- Electric piano, usually a Rhodes sound: bell-like, soft, slightly out of tune.
- Bass, upright or electric, playing few notes and leaving space.
- Brushed or muted drums, swung so the beat lands a fraction late.
- Saxophone or muted trumpet, in short phrases rather than long solos.
- Guitar, clean and jazzy, often with a little chorus effect.
- Texture: vinyl crackle, room noise, rain, a coffee cup.
How it's different from jazz
Jazz is built on playing: improvising, reacting, changing tempo and feel. Lofi jazz borrows jazz's harmony and instruments but keeps hip-hop's structure: a steady beat, a short loop and no surprises. You can listen to jazz. You can leave lofi jazz on.
Where to start
Our lofi jazz room, Cozy Apartment Jazz, is the most jazz-leaning part of the catalog, and it's home to Mellow Mosaic, the track people know from Instagram Reels.

Where lofi jazz came from
The sound goes back to hip-hop producers sampling jazz records, and to the Japanese producer Nujabes, whose jazz-heavy beats for Samurai Champloo shaped the whole genre. The longer story is in what is lofi music, and the name itself in why it's called lofi.
Using it
Lofi jazz works for dinner, reading and slow work, and in videos for cafés, cooking and evening vlogs. Every track in the room is free to use with a credit line.
