Our story

What 408 listener playlists taught us about lofi

By Suman Kumar · October 25, 2026

An old European apartment at night with tall double doors, herringbone parquet, plants and a single desk lamp

In a year, listeners added our music to 408 of their own Spotify playlists. Most have one or two followers and add a handful of plays. Their names are still the best market research we have.

Over the past year, Spotify listeners added our music to 408 of their own playlists. Almost all of them are small, personal playlists with a follower or two, and each one only brought us a handful of plays. But their names tell you exactly where people put lofi: in apartments, with coffee and flowers, on Thursday afternoons, in a summer flat in Germany. We used those names to shape this whole site.

The biggest ones

Spotify shows us the top listener playlists in detail. Here are the eight that sent the most plays in the past 12 months:

Playlist Followers Listeners Plays Our track
Jazz, Bass and Vibes 0 3 24 Mellow Mosaic
cool girl apartment 1 7 24 Mellow Mosaic
calvera 2 4 10 Mellow Mosaic
Dark Cinematic Trap 2 3 10 Velvet Waves Velvet Wounds
coffee and flowers 🌷 3 3 9 Mellow Mosaic
Sommer Altbauwohnung 1 3 9 Mellow Mosaic
lo-fi jazz thursday afternoon (2) 0 3 8 Mellow Mosaic
NYCW🍕🍷 0 3 6 Mellow Mosaic

The biggest listener playlist sent us 24 plays in a year. There are no big curators here, just people making playlists for themselves and a few friends.

What the names say

Read the names as a list and a pattern jumps out. People don't file lofi by genre; they file it by place and time:

  • Rooms: "cool girl apartment", "Sommer Altbauwohnung" (summer in an old apartment building).
  • Moments: "lo-fi jazz thursday afternoon", "coffee and flowers".
  • Cities and evenings: "NYCW🍕🍷", pizza and wine.
  • Moods and textures: "Jazz, Bass and Vibes".

And one surprise: "Dark Cinematic Trap", where someone put Velvet Waves Velvet Wounds, one of our moodier tracks, next to trap beats. Lofi travels further than you'd guess.

Spotify's own playlists did more

Listener playlists add a few plays each. Spotify's personalised features, which build a playlist for each listener, did more in the same year:

Spotify feature Listeners Plays
Daylist 363 392
Radio 67 219
Mixes 15 230
On Repeat 9 138
Smart Shuffle 41 58
Your DJ 15 36
Blend 4 13

The interesting one is Mixes: it played ten different tracks of ours, all from the same album as Mellow Mosaic. Once Spotify learned that people liked one song, it started offering its neighbours. We wrote about that chain reaction in why one song got 65% of our streams.

The last 28 days

A snapshot of a normal month for a small lofi label, as of 30 September 2026:

  • 2,145 streams from 390 listeners
  • 124 new active listeners
  • 124 listener playlists that played us
  • 11 "super listeners", Spotify's name for the most engaged fans

What we did with it

We rebuilt this site around the places those playlists describe. The library is sorted into rooms, named after how listeners actually file the music:

If you release music, look at yours

In Spotify for Artists, open Music, then Playlists, and switch to the past year. Ignore the play counts and read the names. They tell you how people use your music better than any genre tag, and they're the words to use for your own playlists, your video titles and your site.
